Atkinson Hyperlegible: A font for everyone

Tom takes a look at an user-friendly font

This is Tom's first blog post. Sorry if the grammar sucks.

Hi. I'm Tom. And today, we will look at one of the newest fonts in the world: Atkinson Hyperlegible.
It was designed by Applied Design Works and Braille Institute to provide better readability for low vision readers. Its concise glyphs and extreme legibility won it the Fast Company’s 2019 Innovation By Design Award.
Let's take a closer look.

Development

braill5.jpg Atkinson Hyperlegible was developed by Applied Design Works to make a new visual identity for the Braille Institute. It needed to reflect the growing community of vision loss people and the organization's efforts to serve it. However, during production, the studio realized that a typeface that satisfies both this goal and the needs of the partially sighted did not exist yet.

"There was no brief for the Atkinson Hyperlegible typeface, it was born simply out of a strong desire to improve the lives of people with low vision," explained Applied Design Works.
"The number of people who live with low vision is increasing at an incredible rate as people live longer and chronic conditions like diabetes that cause damage to people's eyes," the studio continued. "The Braille Institute asked Applied Design Works to help them with a new positioning and visual identity to reflect a significant shift in the way the organisation helps people adapt to vision loss."

Availability

Atkinson Hyperlegible is available in four font styles – regular, bold, italics, and italics bold.
Each font was developed with a low-vision specialist and a group of people with visual impairments to ensure its readability. The font family also has accent characters to support 27 languages.
It is free for download as a .zip file. Google Fonts hosting is also available.
